The challenge facing the Bouygues group is to keep its finger on the pulse of society so it can continue meeting its customers’ needs effectively. The Group has identified four macrotrends that will require it to adapt its product and services, taking a holistic and sustainable approach.

Thanks to the diversity of its business segments, Bouygues meets people’s essential, everyday needs for housing, transportation, communication, information and entertainment. In every field, our people work hand-in-hand to adapt Bouygues’ products and services and to shape sustainable, holistic responses to new and emerging needs. These interdependent macrotrends are part of a virtuous circle that serves as a source of growth for the Group.

Four macrotrends

1. Population growth and urban densification

Macrotrend: By 2030, urban areas will house around 60% of people globally, while the number of cities with between one and five million inhabitants will pass the 600 mark (The World’s Cities in 2018: Data Booklet, United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, 2018).

  • Buildings that include electro-mobility solutions.
  • Development of neighbourhoods that are resilient to climate change and that have integrated electricity, heat and water production systems.

2. The climate emergency and extinction of biodiversity

Macrotrend: The climate emergency and biodiversity loss require a radical rethink of business models and consumer habits. According to the United Nations, based on current governmental pledges, the planet is on course to warm by 2.7°C by 2100, which is higher than the Paris Agreement target (1.5°C above pre-industrial levels).

3. Digital and technological transformation

Macrotrend: The digital transformation concerns all sectors of the economy, and aims to usher in an era of seamless interaction that drives even greater efficiency in flows, services and transactions.

4. Changing customer behaviour

Macrotrends: Businesses need to adjust their products and services as new societal trends come to the fore, and as e-commerce and the sharing economy gain momentum as a result of the Covid pandemic.
