Bouygues Construction

The Normandy bridge

Stade de France stadium

Building is the original business of the Bouygues group, founded in 1952 by Francis Bouygues. In 1972, Bouygues successfully broke into the civil works market when it built the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris, then the maritime works and oil and gas contracting market.
The 1990s saw an upsurge in the building and civil works business, mainly outside France. Prestigious projects were completed abroad (the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong, motorways in Hungary, Tai Lam tunnels in Hong Kong and the Sydney CityRail airport link) and in France (the Normandy bridge, Grande Arche complex and Stade de France stadium).

In June 1999, the General Meeting of Bouygues SA shareholders approved the transfer of the building and civil works activities to Bouygues Construction. In December 1999, Bouygues sold 100% of the share capital of ETDE to Bouygues Construction to round out its organisation.

A world leader

With operations worldwide, Bouygues Construction is a world leader with prominent positions in the building, civil works and electrical contracting/maintenance markets. Bouygues Construction is also expanding into other sectors, including public-private partnerships, concessions and property development. It combines the strength of a large group with the responsiveness of a network of seven complementary firms: Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France, Bouygues Entreprises France-Europe, Bouygues Bâtiment International, Bouygues Travaux Publics, the Specialist Civil Works Division (VSL and DTP Terrassement), the Concessions Division and ETDE.

International expansion

Bouygues Construction has stepped up its activity on international markets, which accounted for 40% of its sales in 2007. The group operates mainly in the European Union, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific and Africa. This growth has been achieved by reinforcing existing operations (the UK and Switzerland), gaining a foothold in new regions (the Caribbean, Latin America and the Czech Republic) and forming partnerships with local companies.

Some of the major projects currently under way or recently completed include the Lok Ma Chau tunnels in Hong Kong, the Gautrain rapid rail link between Pretoria and Johannesburg in South Africa, several luxury tourist complexes in Cuba, the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Machang Bridge in South Korea, the Tangiers ferry port in Morocco, offices and hotels in Russia, the Sail@Marina Bay residential towers in Singapore, and hospitals, schools and social housing in the UK.

Development of a stronger client offering

Bouygues Construction is a full-service operator that offers its clients a comprehensive range of services all along the project value chain: analysis of needs, financial and technical engineering, packaged development, design, turnkey projects, construction, maintenance and operation. Its full-service offering makes the most of synergies between its major subsidiaries. Bouygues Construction works in close partnership with its clients, getting involved very early on in large-scale or complex projects of a highly technical nature involving tight deadlines or packaged development, project financing and public-private partnerships.

Sustainable development

Fully aware of the challenges and opportunities related to sustainable development, Bouygues Construction set up a sustainable development department in early 2007. Combining the pursuit of performance with respect for people, the group's sustainable development policy has a long-term vision and a highly practical approach. It is an integral part of Bouygues Construction's growth strategy by seeking innovative solutions from labour, social and environmental standpoints. Bouygues Construction also adhered to the United Nations Global Compact in October 2006, thereby underscoring its commitment to sustainable development issues.

With a workforce of 49,800, Bouygues Construction generated sales of €8.3 billion in 2007.

Yves Gabriel has been Chairman and CEO of Bouygues Construction since September 2002.
