Having established a presence in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1970s (Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso), the Bouygues group started to focus on North Africa in the 1980s, winning major contracts in Morocco such as the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Agadir airport and the Casablanca bay sanitation scheme. Bouygues Construction handed over the Tangiers container port in mid-2007 and has won an additional contract to build the ferry port. In Egypt, the group delivered line 2 of the Cairo metro in 2000 and was awarded a new contract to build line 3 in mid-2007. In Algeria, Bouygues Construction is currently building the new British Embassy in Algiers.
In South Africa, Bouygues Construction completed the N4 toll road linking Johannesburg and the port of Maputo in Mozambique and is working on the 80-kilometre Gautrain rail link between Johannesburg and Pretoria as part of a concession contract. |

Colas

In North Africa, Colas has been operating in Morocco since the 1930s. It is involved in the construction and maintenance of road, motorway and airport infrastructure and has substantial industrial activities (production of aggregates, emulsion plants).
In West Africa, Colas builds roads in Benin and Gabon. It is involved in a wide range of activities, such as roads, crushing, building, civil engineering, pipes, mains and electricity, in the Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Mayotte, Mauritius, Djibouti) and New Caledonia. Projects in Madagascar include the construction of infrastructure for major mining projects. In cooperation with the Indian Ocean area, Colas operates a network of emulsion plants in Kenya and southern Africa that covers South Africa, Namibia and Zambia. |

Management of water utilities:
- In Senegal, SDE (Sénégalaise des Eaux) supplies water to nearly 4 million inhabitants in the country's main towns.
- In Ivory Coast, Sodeci provides 9 million people with drinking water. It also operates and maintains wastewater facilities in Abidjan (for 1.6 million inhabitants).
Management of power utilities:
- In Ivory Coast, CIE (Compagnie Ivoirienne d'Electricité) and CIPREL (Compagnie Ivoirienne de production d'electricité) serve 10 million people.
