Accidents, customer complaints, non-compliant products, pollution and litigation are just some of the problems that any company has to deal with in the course of its business. The task of the QSE function is to control operational risks and help reduce the company’s overall risk profile by preparing and implementing mitigation measures within its business areas.
Construction is a sector with a high risk of accidents. In line with its Actitudes sustainable development policy launched in 2007, Bouygues Construction is aiming for "zero accidents". Safety is a top priority. This means combating addictions to alcohol, drugs and other substances, mitigating risks attached to the use of chemicals and acquiring the right habits. For example, hard hats and safety gloves must be worn at all times, and fitness trainers help site workers to warm up before they start work to avoid injury. Prevention means training staff and making them more responsible. The policy applies equally to temporary workers and subcontractors, who have safety clauses inserted in their contracts and who receive training and guides. A special committee is responsible for sharing best practices, ensuring that progress initiatives are consistent, and tracking indicators.
Colas is conducting a host of initiatives: risk assessment, building employee awareness through tools and software, action plans, presentation of safety instructions, behavioural analysis by video, creating in 2010 of an intelligence unit to monitor serious/fatal accidents, etc. All line managers are involved, backed up by coordinators with a day-to-day accident prevention role on the ground. In particular, Colas has taken a highly proactive approach to preventing road accidents. More than 500 road safety officers promote good driving practices, communicate on the best ways to avoid accidents, and participate in work organisation. In 2010, some 30,000 guides on safe, eco-driving practices were sent out to plant operators and vehicle drivers, and a campaign on energy reminded staff that smooth driving contributes to safety.
