1960 - A healthy mind in a healthy body

In the 1960s, Bouygues became the first company in France with sports facilities at its headquarters, at the time located in Clamart.

1963 - Creation of the Minorange guild

The Minorange guild was created to reward skill and merit, recognising the values of transmission of knowledge, fraternity and contributions to worksite safety. It currently has 1,108 members (2010 figure) in 16 orders.

1965 - Improved safety and better living conditions on-site

The wearing of hard hats was made compulsory before it became a statutory obligation and alcohol was gradually banned from worksites. Mobile site accommodation with changing rooms, a canteen and toilets were introduced, a first in France.

Shopping Saturday

1966 - Shopping Saturday

At a time when people still worked six days a week, Bouygues gave its employees one paid Saturday off a month, known as Shopping Saturday. A second followed a few years later.

A special commission was set up in the company to look at safety issues full-time, a first in the construction industry at the time.

Medals for ten years of service

1968 - Medals for ten years of service

Bouygues pays tribute to loyal employees after 10, 20 or 30 years of service. The company organises a formal presentation in which employees receive a “decennial” medal, together with a gift or holiday. In 1968, 45 employees received a medal for ten years of service. In 2010, of the thousands of medals distributed across the Group, the medal for 20 years of service was presented to almost 1,300 employees.

A non-profit association was set up to make loans or payments to employees facing financial difficulties. It remains active today.

Literacy

1970 - Literacy

In the 1970s, more than 50% of site workers had poor French. Bouygues became the first construction firm to provide literacy training, even bringing the classroom onto worksites.

Monthly pay for all employees

1972 - Monthly pay for all employees

Anticipating legislation, all employees were paid on a monthly basis and the working week for site workers was reduced to 42.5 hours. This benefit was accompanied by the introduction of a second "Shopping Saturday" per month (see 1966).

Francis Bouygues granted site workers a thirteenth month's salary.

1983 - Micro-computing

Bouygues was one of the first French companies to make widespread use of the PC, just two years after its launch. Group companies had a computer network and e-mail as early as 1987.

2005 - Founding of the Francis Bouygues Foundation

The Francis Bouygues Foundation was set up to help motivated school-leavers facing financial difficulties. It finances their higher education in all fields, monitors their progress and supports them throughout their studies.

Drafting of a Code of Ethics

2006 - Drafting of a Code of Ethics

Bouygues drafted a formal code of ethics, which was sent out to all Group employees and translated into 15 languages. It requires all employees to comply with a professional ethic set out in a code of principles underpinning employee conduct in all circumstances and in all countries.

Employee share ownership

2010 - Employee share ownership

Bouygues is the CAC 40 company with the highest level of employee share ownership. As at 31 December 2010, employees of Group companies were Bouygues' second-largest shareholder, holding 19.8% of the capital and 24.1% of the voting rights.
